The Art of Packing Light
Overpacking is the most common travel mistake. Experienced travelers pack half as much as beginners and rarely run out of things to wear. The secret is planning outfits in advance, choosing versatile pieces and using a few packing techniques that maximize space.
Before You Pack: Plan Your Outfits
Lay out every outfit for the trip, including underwear and accessories. Now remove one outfit. You will not miss it. Stick to a color palette (neutrals plus one accent color) so everything mixes and matches. Three bottoms and five tops create more outfit combinations than five complete outfits.
Packing Techniques
Rolling vs Folding
Roll soft items (t-shirts, underwear, pajamas, casual clothes) to save space and reduce wrinkles. Fold structured items (dress shirts, blazers, trousers) to maintain their shape. Rolling consistently saves 20 to 30% more space than folding everything flat.
Packing Cubes
Packing cubes are the single most useful packing accessory. Compress clothes into organized cubes by category (tops, bottoms, underwear, accessories). They keep your bag organized throughout the trip and make repacking easy. Medium compression cubes fit the most into the least space.
The Bundle Method
For wrinkle-prone clothing, wrap items around a central core (like a packing cube or toiletry bag) in alternating directions. This distributes pressure evenly and prevents creasing. It is the preferred method for business travelers.
What Bag to Use
Carry-On Only
For trips under a week, a 40 to 45-liter carry-on bag is enough if you pack efficiently. This eliminates checked bag fees and waiting at baggage claim. A leather weekend bag works for shorter 2 to 3-day trips. For longer trips, a structured carry-on with internal organization is ideal.
Crossbody for Day Use
Pack a compact crossbody bag inside your main luggage. Use it as your day bag for sightseeing, carrying just your phone, wallet, sunglasses and a water bottle. Having a day bag prevents you from lugging your main bag around all day.
Packing Checklist
- Clothes: 3 to 5 days of outfits maximum (you can wash mid-trip)
- Shoes: 2 pairs maximum (one on your feet, one in the bag)
- Toiletries: Travel-size only in a clear bag for airport security
- Electronics: Phone, charger, adapter, earbuds (nothing more unless you genuinely need it)
- Documents: Passport, boarding pass, hotel confirmation, travel insurance info
- A reusable tote bag that folds flat for carrying souvenirs or groceries on the trip
Pro Tips
- Wear your heaviest shoes and bulkiest jacket on the plane instead of packing them
- Put liquids in a zip-lock bag even if you have a toiletry case. Leaks happen
- Pack a spare set of underwear and a toothbrush in your carry-on in case checked luggage is delayed
- Leave 20% of your bag empty for things you buy on the trip
- Take a photo of your packed bag as a reference for repacking on the way home
