Advice we give before you buy
The questions we answer most often are the same three, and getting them right matters more than the fixture you choose.
A general rule is 20 lumens per square foot for living rooms, 10 to 20 for bedrooms, 30 to 40 for kitchens and 70 to 80 for bathroom vanities. Layer fixtures rather than relying on one big overhead light.
LEDs require LED-compatible dimmers. An old incandescent dimmer can cause flickering, buzzing or early bulb failure. Look for dimmable fixtures wherever possible — dropping the light to 30 percent in the evening makes a real difference.
Plug-in fixtures are DIY friendly. For hardwired ceiling fixtures, most homeowners can swap a fixture if they are comfortable turning off power at the breaker. Wall and ceiling mounts also save floor space in smaller rooms.
