Choosing Ceiling and Pendant Lights

The fixture above you sets the tone for the whole room. Get the scale, height and style right, and everything else in the space follows. Here is how to pick ceiling and pendant lighting that fits.

Sizing by Room Dimensions

Use this quick formula, add the room length and width in feet, then convert the sum to inches for the fixture diameter. A 12 by 14 foot room wants a fixture around 26 inches wide. For pendants over a dining table, aim for fixture width between half and two thirds of the table width. Hang pendants 30 to 36 inches above a dining or kitchen island surface.

Flush vs Semi-Flush vs Hanging

  • Flush mount sits flat against the ceiling, best for ceilings under 8 feet
  • Semi-flush drops a few inches, adds interest while preserving headroom
  • Pendants and chandeliers need at least 8 feet of ceiling height, more for larger fixtures

Tall ceilings can take statement chandeliers or dramatic multi-light pendants. For pendants specifically, browse our pendant lamps range for focused hanging options.

Style Mix Tips

A ceiling fixture does not need to match every lamp in the room. Pair a modern pendant with classic table lamps for interesting contrast. Use wall sconces of similar metal finish to tie fixtures together.

Dimming and Smart Controls

Fixtures that dim give the most versatility. A dining room at full brightness for homework, dimmed to 30 percent for dinner, creates two completely different rooms. Check that the fixture is marked dimmable, and pair with an LED-compatible dimmer switch.

Frequently Asked Questions

How low should a pendant light hang?

Over a dining table, the bottom of the pendant should sit 30 to 36 inches above the table surface. In open rooms with no furniture directly below, maintain at least 7 feet of clearance from the floor.

Can I use multiple pendants instead of a chandelier?

Yes, a row of 2 or 3 matching pendants often looks more current than a single large chandelier, especially over kitchen islands. Space them evenly and keep spacing proportional to island length.

What size flush mount for an 8 by 10 hallway?

A 12 to 14 inch diameter flush mount works for most hallways of this size. Add a second fixture if the hall runs longer than 15 feet.

Do ceiling lights need dedicated wiring?

New construction allows dedicated circuits for each fixture, but replacing an existing ceiling light usually reuses the current junction box and wiring, making it a straightforward swap.
