Table Lamp Size Guide: How to Pick the Right Height and Width

Size Matters More Than Style

You can pick the most beautiful lamp in the store, but if it is the wrong size for its surface, it will look awkward every day. A lamp that is too small gets lost. A lamp that is too tall overwhelms the table and the room. Getting the proportions right takes about five minutes of measuring and saves years of visual discomfort.

The General Height Rule

When you are seated next to a table lamp, the bottom of the lampshade should be at your eye level. This prevents glare from the bare bulb and directs light downward where you need it. For most situations, this means:

  • Bedside lamps — 24 to 27 inches tall (measured from the table surface to the top of the shade)
  • Living room end table lamps — 26 to 32 inches tall
  • Console or entryway table lamps — 32 to 36 inches tall
  • Desk lamps — 16 to 22 inches tall

These are guidelines, not rigid rules. The key is: shade bottom at seated eye level when you are using the lamp.

Bedside Lamp Sizing

Bedside lamps are the most commonly purchased table lamp and the most commonly mis-sized. The formula is simple:

Your nightstand height plus the lamp height should put the bottom of the shade roughly level with your chin when sitting up in bed (about 28 to 30 inches above the mattress top). For a standard 25-inch nightstand, a lamp of 24 to 27 inches works well. For a taller nightstand (28 to 30 inches), choose a shorter lamp (18 to 22 inches).

Width Proportions

A table lamp should be no wider than two-thirds the width of the surface it sits on. On a 20-inch wide nightstand, the shade should be no wider than about 13 inches. On a 30-inch console table, the shade can be up to 20 inches wide. This proportion keeps the lamp from visually overflowing the table edge, which looks top-heavy and unstable.

Shade Size

The shade should be slightly wider than the widest part of the lamp base. For round bases, the shade diameter should be 1 to 2 inches wider on each side. For tall, narrow bases, a wider shade provides visual balance. For short, wide bases, a narrower shade prevents a squat, heavy look. The bottom of the shade should hide the hardware (harp, socket, bulb) completely.

Pairs of Lamps

When using two matching lamps (flanking a sofa, on matching nightstands), consistency matters more than exact dimensions. Both lamps should be identical or very similar in height, shade size and style. Mismatched heights are visually distracting, even if each lamp individually is the right size for its surface.

Lamps on Console Tables

Console tables in entryways, hallways and behind sofas typically call for taller lamps (32 to 36 inches) because you view them from a standing position. A lamp that looks perfectly sized from across the room may look tiny from above. Also consider the mirror or art above the console: the lamp should not block a significant portion of whatever hangs on the wall behind it.

Desk Lamp Sizing

Desk lamps follow different rules. The light needs to illuminate your work surface without creating glare on screens. Choose a lamp where the shade directs light downward at an angle. Adjustable-arm desk lamps are the most practical because you can position the light exactly where you need it. Height range: 16 to 22 inches, adjustable preferred.

Lamp and Ceiling Light Together

If a room has both a ceiling light and table lamps, the combined light should feel balanced. Table lamps work best when they provide supplementary, lower-level light while the overhead fixture provides general illumination. If you only use table lamps (no overhead), you will typically need 2 to 3 lamps in a living room for adequate coverage.

Small Spaces

In tight spaces, look for slim-profile lamps with narrow bases. A lamp that is 5 inches in diameter takes up much less table real estate than one that is 8 inches wide. Wall sconces eliminate the need for table lamps entirely and free up surface space on nightstands and side tables in small rooms.

How to Measure Before You Buy

  1. Measure the height of the table or nightstand the lamp will sit on
  2. Sit in the position you will normally be in (in bed, on the sofa, at the desk)
  3. Measure from the table surface to your chin/eye level — this is your target lamp height
  4. Measure the width of the table surface — your shade should be no wider than two-thirds of this
  5. Check these measurements against the lamp dimensions before ordering
