How to Set a Table for Dinner: From Casual to Formal

Why Table Setting Matters

Setting a table properly makes everyday meals feel more intentional and hosting feel effortless.

The Casual Setting

  • Dinner plate (center)
  • Fork (left of plate)
  • Knife (right, blade facing in)
  • Spoon (right of knife)
  • Glass (above knife)
  • Napkin (under fork or on plate)

A good set of everyday cutlery makes this simple setting look polished.

The Semi-Formal Setting

Add a salad plate, salad fork (outside dinner fork), soup spoon, wine glass, bread plate and cloth napkin. Cutlery is placed in the order it will be used, from outside in.

The Formal Setting

Add fish fork and knife, dessert spoon and fork (horizontal above plate), additional wine glass, charger plate and place cards. Keep centerpieces under 30 cm tall so they do not block sightlines. Browse our home decor collection for table accents.

General Rules

  • Forks go on the left. Knives and spoons go on the right
  • Knife blades always face inward
  • Glasses go above the knife on the right
  • Bread plates go above the forks on the left
  • Work from the outside in during the meal
