How to Install Wall Sconces: A Beginner's Guide

Plug-In vs Hardwired: Know Before You Start

Wall sconces come in two main types, and the installation process is very different for each:

  • Plug-in sconces: Mount the bracket to the wall, hang the fixture and plug the cord into a standard outlet. No electrical work required. You can do this in 15 minutes
  • Hardwired sconces: Connect directly to your home's electrical wiring through a junction box. This requires turning off the circuit breaker and working with electrical wires. If you are not experienced with electrical work, hire a licensed electrician

Where to Install Wall Sconces

Mounting Height

The standard mounting height for wall sconces is 150 to 170 cm from the floor to the center of the fixture. This is roughly eye level when standing. For bedside reading sconces, mount them 100 to 120 cm from the floor so the light falls at the right angle when sitting up in bed.

Spacing

When installing a pair of sconces (flanking a mirror, fireplace or bed), space them 90 to 120 cm apart. For hallway sconces, space them 180 to 240 cm apart along the wall. Wider spacing creates a calmer feel, closer spacing provides brighter coverage.

Installing Plug-In Sconces (DIY Friendly)

Tools Needed

  • Drill with appropriate bit for your wall type (wood stud, drywall with anchor, plaster)
  • Screwdriver
  • Level
  • Pencil
  • Measuring tape
  • Wall anchors (if not drilling into a stud)

Steps

  1. Mark the desired height on the wall with a pencil. Use a level to ensure the mark is straight
  2. Hold the mounting bracket against the wall at your mark. Use the level again. Mark the screw holes with a pencil
  3. Drill pilot holes at the marked positions. If you hit a stud, great. If not, use wall anchors
  4. Attach the mounting bracket to the wall with screws
  5. Hang the sconce fixture on the bracket according to the manufacturer's instructions
  6. Run the cord down the wall to the nearest outlet. Use cord covers or cable channels for a clean look
  7. Install the bulb, plug in and test

Hiding the Cord

The main downside of plug-in sconces is the visible cord. Here are three solutions:

  • Paintable cord covers that match your wall color (available at hardware stores)
  • Run the cord behind furniture or down a corner where it is less visible
  • Use a cord that matches the wall color (some manufacturers offer white, black and brown cord options)

Tips for a Professional Look

  • Always use a level. A crooked sconce is immediately noticeable
  • Test the height by taping a piece of paper to the wall at different heights and viewing it from across the room before drilling
  • For bedside sconces, sit up in bed and check that the light would fall on your reading material, not in your eyes
  • When installing a pair, measure from a fixed reference point (the ceiling or a centered object) to ensure symmetry
